Erika De Torres (BA 鈥15) graduated from 51猎奇入口with a joint major in political science and gender, sexuality, and women's studies and has travelled across Canada connecting with and mobilizing youth around democracy.

Through her role on SFU鈥檚 Alumni Council, she鈥檚 committed to supporting the next generation of 51猎奇入口students and alumni.
What is a highlight of your career so far?
A memorable highlight has been traveling across Canada to talk with youth about democracy. I鈥檝e been fortunate to visit cities I鈥檇 never expected to see, thanks to my role at Apathy is Boring. It鈥檚 also been a pleasure to speak to 51猎奇入口classes about my work鈥攊t鈥檚 always so much fun!
Why did you now choose to get involved with 51猎奇入口in this way?
I joined the Alumni Council because I loved my time at 51猎奇入口and I wanted to give my time back to the university. The Alumni Council is an excellent opportunity to stay involved and share my skills with a community I care deeply about.
In your opinion, what are the benefits of staying connected to your alma mater, especially at this stage of your career and life?
Staying connected has been incredibly rewarding and beneficial in so many ways. I鈥檝e gained new skills and insights from working with fellow Council members and serving on various committees. Staying in touch with my professors and peers has also reinforced my belief in continuous learning, and I鈥檓 especially grateful to the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies department for keeping alumni engaged.
What is one piece of advice you鈥檇 like to pass along to current students who are close to graduation or recently graduated?
Volunteering has been a huge part of my journey. If you鈥檙e passionate about something, there鈥檚 an organization out there that can use your skills! Not only will you be able to give back, you鈥檒l also develop valuable skills and create long-lasting connections and friendships.
