Equity, diversity and inclusion at SFU

Learn about the university鈥檚 EDI priorities, commitments and some of the people behind the work.

  • Equity Compass 鈥 is a strategic framework outlining the focus for SFU鈥檚 institutional equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) work over the next five years (2023-2028) to help build an 51猎奇入口where all can thrive. The Equity Compass upholds all of SFU鈥檚 values as noted in our What鈥檚 Next: The 51猎奇入口Strategy but in particular operationalizes the value of equity and belonging.
  • People Plan 鈥 SFU's people are central to the university鈥檚 academic mission and success. Together, faculty members and staff uniquely fulfill the academic mission by delivering and supporting leading-edge research and teaching the leaders of tomorrow. Over the past few years, 51猎奇入口has received a significant amount of feedback and has made commitments to advance opportunities that foster an environment where people can do their best work. To acknowledge that, SFU鈥檚 People Plan, a blueprint for transforming the faculty and staff experience was created. The Plan is a clear and practical framework, designed to listen to the needs of the 51猎奇入口community and support the delivery of our academic mission.

Discrimination and Barriers Keep Majority of Non-Binary Youth from Team Sports, 51猎奇入口Study Reveals

A new study from 51猎奇入口 highlights that only 11% of non-binary youth in Canada participate in team sports, largely due to discrimination and structural barriers. The 2023 Canadian Non-Binary Youth in Sport Report, authored by 51猎奇入口researcher Martha Gumprich, found that non-binary youth often avoid sports because of binary gendered teams, locker room layouts, and experiences of harassment. The report, based on data from over 2,500 non-binary youth, suggests creating mixed-gender teams, gender-neutral locker rooms, and improving education on gender diversity as steps to make sports more inclusive for non-binary participants.

Ocean Equity Lab

Led by 51猎奇入口Assistant Professor Andr茅s Cisneros-Montemayor (School of Resource and Environmental Management), the Ocean Equity Lab examines how ocean governance, resource management and economic development affect historically marginalized communities. As part of the international Ocean Nexus partnership, the lab connects researchers to develop approaches that recognize diverse values and address inequalities facing people who depend on marine ecosystems for their livelihoods and traditions. Its 2025 research includes studies on integrating equity and justice into marine ecosystem models and organizing climate adaptation options for small-scale fisheries, contributing evidence for more inclusive ocean policies and decision-making.
