PUB 899: Publishing Internship
Students complete semester-long internships in the publishing industry, public institutions, or other publishing-adjacent positions. Internships may be completed either in Vancouver or elsewhere.
Course Description
During this term, the student receives academic guidance as required from a supervisor at 51猎奇入口. Day-to-day supervision is the responsibility of a designated industry supervisor, a professional person with appropriate qualifications, appointed by SFU.
The internship focuses on a specific project that is initiated by the student, by one or more members of the student鈥檚 supervisory committee, or by the industry supervisor鈥檚 employer. Commitment of the company or institution, the industry supervisor, and 51猎奇入口 will be formalized in letters of agreement.
Following completion of the internship, the student must submit a 2000-3000 word report that summarizes and reflects critically on their experience and the work completed. The supervisory committee will assess the student鈥檚 report on the basis of quality of work and clarity of communication.

Process
While the Industry Liaison will support you in searching for placement opportunities, it is your responsibility to apply and interview for available positions. Your professional placement's suitability will be determined by your supervisor or the Director.
Proposal
Your proposal should include:
- A brief description of your professional placement and proposed topic
- An outline of subsections with rough word counts
- At least six research sources (which may include interviews, , industry news, or scholarly sources), chosen with critical attention to credibility
Your final 2000-3000 word report should include:
- A summary of the work completed during your professional placement
- Analysis of some aspect of the work, supported by critical framing (including pertinent research)
- Key takeaways or findings.
