Welcome

Geography is a vibrant, diverse, and welcoming department at SFU.  As a discipline, Geography is multidisciplinary.  It is a Social Science, focussing on the spatial dimensions of human societies (this is known as Human Geography).  It is a Physical Science, investigating the earth's biogeophysical environments (known as Earth System Dynamics).  And Geography is also an Information Science, mapping, modelling, and analyzing evermore complex interactions among the human and natural environments (i.e., Spatial Information Science).

Our department was a founding member of the University in 1965 and has since become one of the strongest Geography departments in North America. We are ranked 4th among all Geography departments in Canada by the and 1st among Canadian comprehensive universities in the .

A hallmark of our programs is the rich diversity of experiential learning opportunities available to students in the form of tutorials, labs, community collaborations, co-op, field trips and study abroad.

Our faculty are engaged in leading-edge research and teaching, exploring topics as disparate as medical tourism, cultural theory, augmented reality, the politics of property, cellular automata, environmental economic geography, the political economy of environmental change, limnology, landscape ecology, resource depletion, health informatics, climate change, the remote sensing of environmental change, the geographies of racialization, Indigenous geographies and ethnobotany, settler colonialism, soil-plant relationships, political ecology, fluvial geomorphology, urban policy dynamics, ecological modelling, climate change, and paleoglaciology.
