51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Úissues request for proposals for janitorial services
51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Ú is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for our next janitorial services contract, which has been outsourced to BEST Service Pros for the past 15 years.
The current contract cannot be extended and is set to expire in April 2027. Proceeding with the RFP now ensures labour continuity and union recognition in the event of a transition.
Public institutions in B.C. are required to run competitive procurement processes (like RFPs) once contracts reach certain dollar thresholds or time limits to ensure fairness, transparency, and value for public funds. These rules help give all qualified suppliers a fair opportunity to compete and demonstrate accountability to taxpayers.
Regularly re-competing contracts also ensures the institution continues to receive best value, up-to-date services, and innovative solutions, while meeting provincial trade agreement and procurement policy requirements.
A competitive RFP process ensures a janitorial services partner that can deliver consistently high cleaning standards across our campuses, while supporting our commitment to sustainability, equity and worker safety.
The university values all our contracted workers and is committed to ensuring all are treated fairly. Under the terms of the RFP, current contracted janitorial workers will be able to continue in their role, should they desire to do so. They will continue to be represented by CUPE 3338 and will receive compensation package aligned with the living wage.
What are we doing?
51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Úis issuing a Request for Proposals for our next janitorial services contract, which has been outsourced to BEST Service Pros for the past 15 years.
A competitive RFP process will ensure a janitorial services partner that can deliver consistently high cleaning standards across our campuses, while supporting our commitment to sustainability, equity and worker safety.
Why are we doing this now?
The current contract cannot be extended and is set to expire in April 2027. Proceeding with the RFP now ensures labour continuity and union recognition in the event of a transition.
Public institutions in B.C. are required to run competitive procurement processes (like RFPs) once contracts reach certain dollar thresholds or time limits to ensure fairness, transparency, and value for public funds.
These rules help give all qualified suppliers a fair opportunity to compete and demonstrate accountability to taxpayers.
What will be the impact on current janitorial workers?
The university values all our contracted workers and is committed to ensuring all are treated fairly.
Under the terms of the RFP, current contracted janitorial workers will be able to continue in their role, should they desire to do so. They will continue to be represented by CUPE 3338.
As a new contract is implemented, it is essential that there be continuity in service and a seamless staffing transition.
What criteria will be used to select the successful provider?
51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Úis seeking a service partner that aligns with our values of respect, sustainability, equity, and accountability.
The successful proponent will deliver consistent, high-quality cleaning services that support safe, healthy, and welcoming campus environments.
We are looking for a partner that:
- Treats employees fairly and fosters a respectful, inclusive workplace and will pay a living wage to their staff who provide services at SFU.
- Demonstrates a commitment to sustainability through responsible practices and waste reduction
- Communicates openly and operates with transparency and accountability
- Works collaboratively with 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Úand is responsive to evolving campus needs
- Focuses on continuous improvement and delivering long-term value
Overall, 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Úis looking for a proponent that not only meets service expectations but also contributes positively to the campus community.
Safety on our campuses are always a top priority. As standard practice, we work with all successful proponents to ensure the safety of contract workers on our three campuses.
