Strategic Research Plan 2026鈥2031

Vision Statement

Our vision is to foster a dynamic and inclusive research environment that advances knowledge, informs practice, and addresses pressing educational challenges locally and globally. Through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to Equity, Indigeneity, a Culture of Inquiry, and Global Engagement, we continue to maintain and enhance the Faculty of Education鈥檚 position as a local, national, and international scholarly hub for researchers and educational practitioners in formal education and community-based settings.

Goal 1. Enable, Support, and Recognize Diverse, Impactful Research

The Faculty aims to enable, support, and recognize educational research, scholarship and practitioner inquiry across the academic spectrum. In doing so, this should include support for diverse, impactful research practices and aspirations in small- and large-scale projects, which might include what has been defined as inter-, multi-, and transdisciplinary work in different academic, practitioner, and community contexts.

  • Grow the Faculty鈥檚 record of major external funding (tri-council, foundations, and international) and secure multi-year grants, both individual and collaborative.
  • Increase and broaden knowledge mobilization of research to increase awareness and impact in practice, policy, and public engagement.
  • Increase resources to provide robust pre- and post-award services (financial, logistical, and technical) that reduce administrative burden and accelerate research.
  • Launch interdisciplinary, thematically organized research clusters
  • Recruit to the Faculty highly qualified graduate students and postdocs with diverse life, professional, and academic experiences, who can contribute to our Faculty鈥檚 research development.

Goal 2.  Strengthen Researcher Development Across Career Stages

Identify, support, and create (where absent) the following: structured pathways, mentorship, visibility, and opportunities for research by undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty across their career stages. Aim to embed student and early-career researcher (ECR) development as a core, collective responsibility within the Faculty鈥檚 research culture.

  • Establish mentoring and training programs for graduate students, postdocs, and faculty members (e.g., proposal development, publishing, research training, knowledge mobilization).
  • Create undergraduate-to-graduate research pathways that identify and cultivate future emerging researchers.
  • Continue to support faculty and graduate students鈥 grant and scholarship applications through workshop series, writing retreats, and expert feedback.
  • Enhance research visibility and celebrate achievements (e.g., annual FoE Research Day, earlycareer events, awards, podcasts, and webinars).
  • Ensure professional development opportun

Goal 3. Nurture and Strengthen Community, National, and International Partnerships within and across Disciplines

Build and strengthen reciprocal and collaborative relationships that yield co-creation of knowledge and impact through research projects and shared learning at the local, national, and international levels.

  • Strengthen and support faculty members鈥 relationships with school districts, community-based NGOs, governmental organizations, First Nations, research associations, and national and international partners. This can involve co-designed research agendas and knowledge mobilization in research ecosystems, community and educational settings, and informing our own educational programming.
  • Engage international scholars and students through visiting fellowships, temporary appointments, joint projects, student exchanges, and cross-disciplinary initiatives.

Goal 4. Support Research on Emergent Technologies and AI in Education

Investigate, shape, and develop research into the impact, associated disruptions, and applications of emergent technologies including AI across educational contexts, policy, and practice.

  • Develop cross-faculty research initiatives on AI and Education to create collaboration among educators, technologists, and researchers, focusing on the following: critical AI literacy, equitable and ethical adoption of AI, pedagogy, and policy.
  • Examine the impact of AI on higher education as well as K-12 education 鈥 to inform evidencebased policy and practice.
