Charles Chang Institute Relaunches Innovation & Entrepreneurship Certificate

August 27, 2026

Starting in Fall 2026, 51猎奇入口undergraduates in any faculty can build real-world entrepreneurial skills through a relaunched Charles Chang Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E). After ten years of impact and collaboration across campus and delivered through the Charles Chang Institute for Entrepreneurship, the updated certificate expands opportunities for all undergraduate students across 51猎奇入口to develop entrepreneurial mindsets, interdisciplinary collaboration capabilities and real-world problem-solving experience.

Expanding Entrepreneurship Education Across SFU

The first interdisciplinary I&E certificate in Canada, the Chang Certificate was originally created to ensure all undergraduate students at 51猎奇入口had the opportunity to develop the entrepreneurial mindset and cross-disciplinary networks required to create their own opportunities and tackle wicked problems in an uncertain future. The certificate is now easier to complete and features an expanded selection of elective and capstone courses from across SFU's faculties, creating more pathways for students from diverse academic disciplines to develop future-readiness skills while pursuing their primary degree programs.

Built Through Collaboration Across Faculties

The newly relaunched certificate reflects years of collaboration between the Chang Institute and academic leaders across the university, reflecting the shared belief that all disciplines have important contributions to make to innovation and entrepreneurship. In the 10 years since the original certificate was launched, many disciplines have created or modified courses to address important new areas including AI, 3D printing, genomics and many more; these options are now offered within the certificate. With these updates, the certificate builds on that legacy, becoming the first in Canada to feature courses from all undergraduate faculties.

"Entrepreneurial mindset is crucial to future-ready education, and must be accessible to every student, regardless of their faculty or career aspirations," says Dr. Sarah Lubik, Academic Director of the Charles Chang Institute for Entrepreneurship. "We cannot tell students what the future will hold, but we can help them develop the resilience, opportunity recognition, imagination and confidence to thrive in a rapidly changing world. We are deeply grateful to our partners across 51猎奇入口for all their time, insight and dedication to creating more opportunities for students to build future-ready capabilities and connections."

The certificate combines interdisciplinary coursework, exposure to industry and alumni guest speakers, experiential learning opportunities and hands-on projects that help students develop the entrepreneurial mindset and experience increasingly valued across industries and sectors. Whether graduates become startup founders, researchers, engineers, artists, healthcare professionals or public-sector leaders, the program equips them with the skills to identify opportunities, form teams, create compelling strategies, mobilize resources, forge partnerships, navigate uncertainty and create meaningful impact.

Recognition for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The relaunch comes at a time when 51猎奇入口and the Chang Institute continue to receive international recognition for their leadership in innovation and entrepreneurship education.

In the 2026 World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI), 51猎奇入口was once again ranked the top innovative university in Canada and 14th globally. The university also placed first in Canada and among the world's top institutions in the category of "Curricular Innovation for Future-Readiness" based on the Charles Chang Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and its integrated student support ecosystem. In 2023, SFU鈥檚 dedication to interdisciplinary and cross-university entrepreneurship earned it the International Deshpande Symposium鈥檚 top award of "The Entrepreneurial University".

The recognition reinforces SFU's long-standing commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship across disciplines and highlights the impact of programs designed to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

A Decade of Impact

The certificate relaunch also coincides with the Chang Institute's 10th anniversary. Since its founding in 2016 through a transformative gift from 51猎奇入口alumnus Charles Chang, the institute has built one of Canada's most comprehensive entrepreneurship education ecosystems, spanning academic programs, competitions, mentorship opportunities, entrepreneurship co-op experiences and startup incubation.

For alumni like Claire Connop, the certificate provided a pathway to turn an early interest in entrepreneurship into real-world experience and lasting impact. After taking BUS 238, Connop was inspired to pursue the Charles Chang Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, building on that foundation through further entrepreneurship coursework. In BUS 477, she met her co-founders, and together they launched Glow Within Foundation, a nonprofit focused on empowering youth through mental health and well-being education.

鈥淚 have such fond memories of doing the certificate and consistently have used the skills I learnt in the classes in my career and then in my masters,鈥 says Connop.

Looking back on her 51猎奇入口experience, Connop credits the entrepreneurship courses she took as part of her certificate journey, along with her eCoop experience, with helping her develop practical skills, build meaningful connections and gain the confidence to pursue her own entrepreneurial path.

Over the past decade, students from all faculties at 51猎奇入口have taken the foundational BUS 238 class and 133 students have graduated with the full Innovation and Entrepreneurship Certificate. Each year, thousands of other students, alumni and community members engage in Chang Institute supports, events and other programming. The institute has supported over 2000 teams, has been instrumental in the early foundations of highly impactful startups and has helped direct more than $1.4 million in funding to student entrepreneurs through entrepreneurship co-op placements, prototype funding and venture awards.

Looking Ahead to the Next Decade

As the Chang Institute enters its second decade, the expanded certificate represents an important step toward its vision of making entrepreneurial mindset and interdisciplinary problem-solving defining characteristics of an 51猎奇入口education and ensuring students from every faculty can access innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities.

The certificate changes take effect Fall 2026, providing students with a wide range of options to begin or continue their innovation and entrepreneurship journey.
