August 20, 2026

Students from across 51猎奇入口faculties pitch interdisciplinary ventures at an end-of-term showcase

On July 30, 2026, the BUS 238: Introduction to Innovation and Entrepreneurship class transformed the 51猎奇入口Surrey campus into a vibrant showcase of creativity, collaboration, and entrepreneurial thinking during its annual Demo Day.

The event celebrated the culmination of a semester of hands-on learning, where interdisciplinary undergraduate students presented innovative venture ideas developed throughout the Summer 2026 term under the guidance of Amyn Somani, Term Assistant Professor of Practice, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Beedie School of Business.

As the foundation course and gateway to the Charles Chang Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, BUS 238 welcomes students from across 51猎奇入口's faculties and disciplines. The course introduces students to entrepreneurial thinking through experiential learning, equipping them with the mindset and practical tools to identify real-world problems, validate ideas, and develop innovative solutions.

This year's student ventures reflected the diversity of both the participants and the challenges they chose to tackle. Teams explored opportunities across healthcare, clean energy, smart systems, consumer technology, transportation, apparel, sustainability, and community wellbeing. Throughout the semester, students worked collaboratively to refine their concepts, conduct customer discovery, and prepare investor-style pitches for Demo Day.

The event was supported by the Charles Chang Institute for Entrepreneurship, which helped organize the showcase and bring in jury members representing academia, industry, entrepreneurship, venture capital, and MBA community, providing students with valuable feedback while exposing them to the perspectives of experienced innovators and business leaders. The Chang Institute鈥檚 engagement reflects its continued commitment to supporting experiential entrepreneurship education and helping students build meaningful connections with the innovation ecosystem.

Seeing them confidently present their ventures to external judges is one of the most rewarding moments of the course."

For many students, Demo Day marked more than the end of a course鈥攊t served as the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey. The experience gave participants the opportunity to present their ideas to experienced professionals, receive constructive feedback, expand their professional networks, and gain confidence in communicating innovative solutions.

As the entry point to the Charles Chang Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, BUS 238 provides students from all 51猎奇入口faculties with an accessible introduction to innovation and entrepreneurship. Students who wish to continue developing their entrepreneurial skills can build upon this foundation through additional certificate courses, experiential learning opportunities, and the wide range of programs offered by the Charles Chang Institute for Entrepreneurship.

By bringing together students, faculty, entrepreneurs, investors, alumni, and community partners, Demo Day exemplifies the Chang Institute's mission of fostering interdisciplinary innovation and preparing the next generation of changemakers to create meaningful impact both within and beyond the university.
