Tuition Setting
Every year, 51猎奇入口consults with students as part of the university鈥檚 tuition-setting and budget planning process. This consultation helps the university understand impacts of tuition fees and shape future investments in services, programs and supports that shape the student experience. Past consultations have helped the university better understand student affordability concerns, priorities for support services and areas where investments can improve the student experience.
The consultation process is done in the fall to set tuition fees for the following year. This has included gathering student feedback, analyzing sentiments towards changes in tuition fees, and considering various factors that impact the university鈥檚 financial health and its ability to meet enrolment targets. 51猎奇入口also consults with SFSS and GSS to hear their perspectives as representatives and advocates for the undergraduate and graduate student experience. SFSS and GSS are also provided an opportunity to provide written feedback to the university regarding any proposed changes to tuition and student fees as per SFU鈥檚 Consultation with Students on Tuition Fees (policy B10.15).
This process is led by the Offices of the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President Students and the Vice-Provost and Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies.
Proposed tuition changes for 2027-2028
As part of the annual tuition-setting process, 51猎奇入口is considering the proposed tuition increases below. These are being shared so that students understand what is being considered and can provide informed feedback.
Undergraduate programs
- Domestic students: 2% increase for new and returning students in alignment with the BC Government鈥檚 Tuition Limit Policy.
- International students: between 4-6% increase for new and returning students.
Graduate programs
- Domestic students: 2% increase for new and returning students in alignment with the BC Government鈥檚 Tuition Limit Policy.
- International students: Up to 6% for programs with international fees and 2% for programs without international fees.
It鈥檚 important to note that the provincial government does not provide funding for international students. This means tuition is the sole source of funding to cover the cost of international student education.
Your feedback matters
Students play an important role in shaping the 51猎奇入口experience. We recognize that students are concerned about affordability and that tuition increases can affect individuals in different ways. We also recognize that universities are facing ongoing financial pressures. While consultation will not eliminate need for tuition increases, it can help the university understand how changes may affect students and where investments will have the greatest impact on your 51猎奇入口experience.
Developing SFU鈥檚 budget for 2027-28 is currently underway across the university and your feedback is needed.
How to participate
Survey
The tuition consultation survey opens Monday, September 14, 2026. Each student will receive an email with an individual link to participate in the survey. This ensures that only one submission per student is received.
Discussions
Take part in a conversation about tuition and the student experience. At this World Caf茅 event for undergraduate and graduate students, you'll learn about proposed tuition changes and participate in small group discussions, facilitated by the 51猎奇入口Centre for Dialogue, to discuss what matters most to you, including the services, programs, and supports that contribute to your success at SFU. Your feedback will help inform university decision-making and will be considered alongside input received through the student tuition consultation survey. Senior leaders will be present at the small tables to hear from you directly.

Next steps
Tuition is scheduled for approval at the January 2027 Board meeting. The final 2027-28 Financial and Budget Plan will be shared with the Board of Governors for approval in late March 2027. Learn about SFU鈥檚 budget here.
