Grad and Family Housing eligibility and priority housing

Learn about the requirements to live in residence and whether you may qualify for priority housing consideration. Housing offers are based on eligibility, priority criteria, and application completion dates. We encourage students to apply as early as possible, as residence spaces are limited.

Eligibility

Eligibility requirement

To remain eligible to reside in residence you must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿ÚGraduate student 
    • you must be and remain registered in on campus courses in a full-time 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Úgraduate program 
  • 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿ÚUndergraduate student
    • you must be and remain registered in a degree granting program in at least nine (9) credits per term for at least the fall and spring term 
    • you must be and remain living with your spouse/common-law partner and or children under nineteen (19) years of age Exceptions to full-time enrolment requirements include enrollment in Back On Track or Co-op Education programs; by recommendation from the Centre for Accessible Learning or Academic Advising; or by appeal from Residence and Housing

Priority Housing

Some 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Ústudents who apply to residence qualify for Priority Housing Offer.

You must be eligible to receive an offer:

  • admitted to SFU
  • have no financial holds on your student account
  • have a completed application for housing

And Meet one of the following:

  1. Indigenous students: students admitted to 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Úwho are First Nations, (Status or Non-Status), Metis or Inuit
  2. Current or former BC Youth in Care
  3. 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿ÚUndergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarship Recipients (USES,UGGLA) and Student Athletes on a Full-ride Scholarship
  4. 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿ÚWUSC Student Refugee Program
  5. New students with a disability or ongoing medical condition that significantly affects your housing needs (Students complete an Accessibility Accommodation request in their application process and will then be asked to provide additional information demonstrating eligibility to be reviewed by the Centre for Accessible Learning)
  6. FALL INTAKE: Current residents (Fall/Spring) that are under 19 years of age by July 1 for the upcoming Fall term and have applied by February 1

Note: Priority Offers are based on available inventory when the application is completed (i.e. not the same as priority placement).

You must meet the following requirements:

  • You are eligible to live in residence
  • Your application to 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿ÚHousing is completed before May 1 (this generally means that you have completed your housing application prior to receiving your 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Úadmission offer)
  • You have accepted your 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Úoffer of admission by May 1
  • You are entering 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Údirectly from high school (i.e. you have not completed any post-secondary coursework since graduating)

Post Doctoral Fellow

A maximum of two (2) x two (2) -bedroom units in Graduate and Family Housing may be assigned to Postdoctoral Fellows.

Application Process

  • Postdoctoral fellows should connect with the VPRI office or designate form the Postdoctoral Association who will be collecting interest and determining priority/wait list.
  • Postdoctoral Association will submit to Residence and Housing an eligible postdoctoral fellow for placement
  • Residence and Housing will communicate with the postdoctoral fellow to submit a housing application through the Housing portal:
  • Postdoctoral fellows should submit application and indicate POSTDOC in lieu of student number

Offer for housing

  • If an offer can be made, an application fee will be added to the housing application if not already paid
  • The Postdoctoral fellow will accept the Residence Contract and Handbook
  • A nonrefundable confirmation fee is required to accept the offer 
  • All offers have a contract end date of June 30 and all residents may renew their housing for the following contract period by the deadline as outlined in the contract
