Working off-campus: Requirements

Exchange students may be eligible to work off-campus while studying at SFU, provided they hold a valid study permit and meet IRCC's off-campus work eligibility requirements.  In order to work off-campus you must meet all of the following requirements:

1. SFU鈥檚 definition of full time or regularly scheduled break (see Full Time Status and Regularly Scheduled Break) in the term you wish to work off-campus 
2. You have a valid study permit that includes a condition stating you may work off-campus
3. You are enrolled in a program of 6 months or more that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate

If you are eligible to work off-campus, you may work a maximum of 24 hours per week during regular academic sessions (terms), and full-time during regularly scheduled breaks.

The definitions, permitted hours, and eligibility requirements differ for working on or off campus. You may be eligible to work only on-campus, off-campus, or both. Review our Working On and Off Campus handout for more information. 

i Study Abroad students who pay fees to 51猎奇入口are not eligible to work off-campus under their study permit.

i Exchange and Study Abroad students are not eligible to participate in SFU's Co-operative Education Program.

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

You must have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) if you wish to work in Canada.  Visit this section of the 51猎奇入口website for information about how to apply for a SIN.
