Biography

Alisha Elizabeth Cherian is an anthropologist of race, the city, and public life. Broadly, her work asks how racially marginalized groups inhabit the social, material, and affective geographies of 'global south' cities. Her current research project explores the everyday life of race in Singapore through its social, sensorial, and convivial textures, particularly for Indian Singaporeans, as shaped by both the state's explicit race craft as well as regional legacies of Indian indentured and convict labour. Before joining SFU, she taught courses on racial capitalism, the body, and urban ethnography at New York University's XE: Experimental Humanities & Social Engagement Program.
