Research by Visiting Scholars
The Department of Linguistics accepts a limited number of visiting scholars to enrich research collaborations with colleagues across Canada and around the world. If you wish to apply as a visiting scholar, you must gain sponsorship from a faculty member with research interests closely related to yours. Please note that the department is not able to offer extensive support.
How to Apply
Step 1: Submit application to a Faculty Sponsor
Find a potentially suitable faculty sponsor by consulting the faculty profile pages and the Research Areas by Faculty page.
The following documents must be submitted directly to your intended Faculty sponsor:
- A letter explaining why you would like to become a visiting scholar, including the dates and duration of your intended stay
- A current Curriculum Vitae
- A summary of your research interests
Step 2: Await Approval
- A response from a faculty member may take several weeks. The department has limited capacity to accept visiting scholars.
Step 3: Receive Your Letter of Invitation
- Follow the instructions in your letter of invitation and consult with your faculty sponsor to answer any questions or concerns.
Please note the following:
- Visiting scholars are entitled to library and internet privileges but are not normally eligible for financial support or use of departmental resources (office space, computer, photocopier, etc.).
- Classes can only be audited and prior approval of the course instructor is required.
- If you require a visa to visit Canada, the department cannot assist you with your application to Immigration Canada, however the Letter of Invitation serves as an official statement of your purpose to visit the country.
