Abstract:
This thesis describes the use of quotation in Hul鈥檘鈥檜mi鈥檔um鈥� narratives. Hul鈥檘鈥檜mi鈥檔um鈥� is the Island dialect of Halkomelem spoken on the southeastern coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Quotation varies in form throughout Hul鈥檘鈥檜mi鈥檔um鈥檔arratives, occurring as indirect quotation or as direct quotation in varying strength of theatricality marked by prosody and style. The variation in form is based on how the representation of the instance of speech contrasts with the surrounding narrative, where markedly different and theatrical quotation signals high points in the discourse
