Fourth-year mechatronics student showcase innovative Capstone projects in action

Last Friday, the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering (MSE) brought innovation in action to the spotlight, where fourth-year students presented their eight-month projects at the Capstone Project Showcase

Instructed by Professor Farid Golnaraghi, the day highlighted students' prototypes ranging from areas such as healthcare and assistive technologies, autonomous systems that enhance users' life quality, smart agritech instrastrucutre. Working from early concepts to an actual product, students applied technical knowledge and hands-on experiences gained throughout their degree to address real-world engineering challenges.

As a culminating experience of the MSE undergraduate program, the Capstone Project gives students the opportunity to bring engineering design, teamwork, project management and creative problem-solving together beyond academic settings and prepare them for their future careers.

Atmosense — Drone-Based Aerial COAnalysis System for Precision Farming (Korea/Taiwan project)

To support sustainable and precise farming practices, the team is developing a drone-based system that monitors COâ‚‚ levels in real time. Equipped with a gas sensor and GPS tracking system, the drone can map emission hotspots and coolect air quality data across farms. By analyzing the data and ensuring accruate predictions, it helps improve future crop management and support climate-smart agriculture process.

To enhance running experience and performance, the team explores how AI- and AR-powered smart glasses can support runners by capturing motion data and translating it into real-time performance insights. Using head movement to estimate metrics such as cadence, stride length and speed, the system provides continuous feedback that can help runners adjust their form and technique without relying on wrist-worn devices.

While current mommograms can cause discomfort due to breast compression, the team developed a sensing system that tracks probe pressure, orientation and location. The project aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of Near-Infrared (NIR) optical probes used in breast cancer screening and monitoring, supporting the future use of NIR imaging in clinical settings.
