How did global TV news channels cover the convoy protest in Canada?
I examined the total鈥痑irtime of鈥痭ews coverage of the truckers protest in Ottawa by鈥10 news channels: (BLOOMBERG,鈥疌NBC,CNN,鈥疐OXNEWS, MSNBC,鈥疉LJAZEERA,鈥疊BCNEWS,鈥疍W,鈥疪T, and鈥疌BS), and鈥疘 used Google鈥檚 GDELT for this inquiry.
To search these channels, I used the following terms: 鈥渃onvoy protest鈥, 鈥渢ruckers protest鈥, 鈥渢ruckers convoy鈥, 鈥渢rucker protest鈥, 鈥渇reedom convoy鈥, 鈥渢rucker protest鈥 and by specifying the following dates during which the event was mentioned: 1/13/2022 until 4/12/2022.
Theoretically, the more attention given to a topic, the more important it is for the news organization.
The second point is the framing of the protest that is often described in relation to freedom of expression and/or movement.鈥疐or example, I 鈥痑nalyzed the terms that RT mostly used in鈥痙escribing鈥痶he movement and it is actually the phrase 鈥渇reedom convoy鈥 (mentioned 1032 times) and it got the highest airtime coverage, too (see the鈥痸isualization below).
Other鈥痗ommon phrases鈥痑ssociated with the news鈥痗overage鈥痠nclude鈥減eaceful demonstration鈥 and 鈥減eaceful protestors鈥, indicating the channel鈥檚 preference in framing the protestors.
The link鈥痓elow shows another visualization of RT鈥檚 news coverage.
Finally, it is interesting to see in鈥 鈥痶he type of sources and people RT decided to interview to cover the convoy protest.
