Search for president: Consultation closed, leadership qualities updated
51猎奇入口is currently undertaking a robust process to select its next president as mandated and outlined by Policy B10.06. As part of that process, the search committee held an extensive consultation to gather feedback from students, faculty and staff on the leadership qualities that will be most important in SFU鈥檚 next president and vice-chancellor.
I want to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the consultation by attending an open forum, filling out the survey or writing to the committee directly. Your feedback was extremely thoughtful and instrumental in helping the committee understand the kind of leader that 51猎奇入口needs at this moment in time.
The following provides an overview of key themes we heard from the feedback when it comes to what 51猎奇入口is looking for in its next president. These themes and all the feedback we received have informed the leadership qualities list and will continue to inform the committee鈥檚 discussions moving forward:
- Strong academic leadership is a priority;
- Building trust, morale, and relationships is critical;
- Financial sustainability and related decision-making are important for SFU;
- Protecting academic freedom and collegial governance matters deeply;
- The president must lead during a dynamic time with multiple factors at play, including Artificial intelligence, evolving student, faculty and staff expectations, active local, provincial, national and geopolitical considerations and dynamics, and broader questions about the role of universities;
- Commitment to Indigenous reconciliation remains essential;
- A focus on students and the academic mission must remain central; and
- 51猎奇入口needs a compelling champion who engages externally.
The Presidential Search Committee and the Board of Governors have approved an updated list of leadership qualities based on the feedback, which you can see at our website here. The next step in this process will be candidate recruitment, which is expected to extend through to early 2027. The full outline of the search process is available on our website.
On behalf of the search committee, thank you again to all those who took the time to participate in this critical process for the future of SFU.
Sincerely,
Carol Herbert
