The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program provides universities the opportunity to recruit world-class scholars across all research disciplines. Chairholders aim to achieve research excellence in engineering and the natural sciences, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences, improving our depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthening international competitiveness, and training the next generation of highly skilled people.

  • A Tier 2 candidate should show potential to grow into a leader in their research field and be in the top 10% of their field among candidates at similar career stage.
  • A Tier 1 candidate should be an internationally recognized leader in their field and in the university as a whole.
  • Full details of the Canada Research Chairs Program are available .

Program Updates

July 2026 Updates:

  • In 2026, the CRC program moved to a continuous intake model with no fixed deadlines. 51猎奇入口has implemented internal deadlines for CRC submissions in response to this change.  The availability of three nomination deadlines annually helps provide flexibility and supports workload planning.
  • ISA has implemented an Early Draft review process in response to the upcoming changes to the CRC program's review criteria and revised deadlines, as well as feedback we received directly from CRC nominees on ways to improve SFU's nomination process. The goal is to provide collaborative, early-stage support to nominees and faculties to strengthen each nomination.
  • Kick-off meetings with ISA are now a required part of the CRC nomination and renewal process to ensure a shared understanding of program and institutional requirements, timelines, roles, and expectations.
  • Tier 2 eligibility criteria has changed:  T2 nominees must be within 10 years of their first independent academic research related appointment at the time of nomination, rather than from their first highest degree.
  • Changes to application instructions and CV format are expected from the program in late 2026.
  • ISA is in the process of updating the CRC webpages for clarity.
  • Full program updates can be seen on the program webpage:
