We are pleased to introduce Dr. Ibrahim Muradov as the Simons Foundation Canada Postdoctoral Fellow for 2026-2027. As the latest member at the school, his research focuses on international security, alliance politics, hybrid warfare, and the Russia鈥揢kraine war, with particular attention to how states and societies respond to external aggression and coercion.

Prior to joining SFU, Dr. Muradov was a Visiting Scholar with the Petrach Program on Ukraine at George Washington University and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Sessional Lecturer at the University of British Columbia. From 2020 to 2024, he was a faculty member in the Department of International Relations and Audit at Dnipro University of Technology in Ukraine, where he continued his research and teaching until Russia鈥檚 full-scale invasion forced him to leave the country.

Dr. Muradov received his Ph.D. in International Relations from Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, T眉rkiye. His scholarship examines the evolution of Russian warfare in Ukraine, from hybrid warfare in the Donbas to the full-scale invasion launched in 2022, as well as broader security dynamics in the post-Soviet space. His recent research explored how Ukrainian agency has shaped Western responses to Russian aggression and influenced patterns of international balancing and security cooperation. His work has appeared in journals including Europe-Asia Studies and Defence Studies.

Dr. Muradov's current research investigates the international response to Russia鈥檚 invasion of Ukraine through the lens of defensive structural realism. This work seeks to advance realist theory by developing the concept of defender-side agency and exploring its implications for international security and alliance politics.
