Cool Courses
EVSC 350 - Isotopes of Human Impact: Atoms to Anthropocene
Inspects the record of human impact on the environment by diving into the subatomic world of isotopes. Students will study modern local/global case studies from mapping Pacific food webs to the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Students will develop a diverse 鈥渋sotope toolbox鈥 for understanding different environmental issues and controversies. Prerequisite: One of EVSC 100 or GEOG 111 or EASC 101 or REM 100; and one of Chemistry 12 (or equivalent) or CHEM 120 or CHEM 121. Students with credit for EVSC 395 under the title "Environmental Isotopes" in Spring 2026 may not take this course for further credit.
EVSC 410 - River Restoration - 4 units
Ice ages become climate warm periods, but how and why?
Paleoclimatology is the study of changes to Earth's past climates. The knowledge gained can help us better predict how human activity will impact climate in the future.
This course will familiarize students with climate models and the other interdisciplinary tools used in this work.
Prerequisite: REM 100 or EVSC 100; GEOG 111 or EASC 101 or EASC 106; and 45 units. Recommended: EASC 210, GEOG 214 or GEOG 215. Students with credit for REM 334 may not take this course for further credit. Students who have taken REM 463-3 "Special Topics" in Spring 2019 may not enroll in this course for further credit.
EVSC 495 - Special Topics: Morphodynamics - 3 units
Morphodynamics is the science of how physical environments evolve in response to the action of fluid forces.
In this course, students will learn the underlying theory used to predict how the physical environment evolves in response to fluid flow. They will also develop the ability to make simple morphodynamic predictions of physical environmental change.
Suitable for students in Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, Physical Geography, and Biology with a basic understanding of calculus and who enjoy working on simple mathematical and physics problem sets.
Prerequisite: MATH 151 (or 154), MATH 152 (or 155), PHYS 120 (or 101), PHYS 121 (or 102); one of EVSC 100, GEOG 111, or EASC 101; and 60 units; or permission of the instructor.
*EVSC students interested in taking courses not included in their current curriculum should contact their advisor (evscadv@sfu.ca) for permission*
*Special Topics courses are not available for Applied Bio Stream students who are planning to register as an RPBio*
