CUPE
Collective Agreement Finalized Between 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Úand CUPE Local 3338
We are pleased to share that the University and CUPE Local 3338 have finalized a new Collective Agreement, covering the period of April 1, 2025 until March 31, 2029.
The agreement was finalized following a successful ratification vote by CUPE members and approval by the 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿ÚBoard of Governors.
The settlement was negotiated within the Province’s 2025 Balanced Measures Mandate, and provides for general wage increases at 3% per year over the four year term.
The university is also pleased that the bargaining teams were able to address the following key priorities:
Living Wage
The Living Wage LOU, with funds set aside for expected wage rates in the mandate period, was renewed, reinforcing the University’s alignment with the program.
Sick Leave Protocol
New language provides for the development of a joint SFU-CUPE evaluation report, including recommendations to transition the current pilot to ongoing operations. It also provides additional supports for employees on accommodation and return to work, and also reflects legislative changes for the provision of sick notes to support use of sick leave.
Benefits Changes
- Enhanced retiree benefits – Introduce eligibility for tuition waivers for retirees and extended health benefits on a self-pay basis
- Personal spending account – Established a new personal spending fund of $150 per continuing employee per calendar year commencing January 1, 2027, covering fitness and recreation, equipment and gear, health and wellness services and mental health and lifestyle supports.
- Health Spending Account – Established a new health spending fund up to $450 per continuing employee by 2027.
- Extended Health Benefit Enhancements – Include coverage for mental health services to $2,500 per year per eligible employee or dependent, orthodontic benefits increasing up to $3,500 lifetime limit per eligible employee or dependent, and dental health benefits 100% paid by employer by April 1, 2028.
Professional Development
Increases to the professional development entitlement up to $800 per eligible employee per year by 2029, with a maximum accumulation of $5,500.
Workloads / Classification
Renewed the Compensation and Classification Working Group LOU and enhanced language for the process to review workloads.
The university wishes to thank CUPE’s bargaining team for the productive discussions, and the university bargaining committee members involved in reaching this agreement.
