School of Criminology
In memoriam: Duncan Chappell
We are saddened to learn of the passing of professor Duncan Chappell on August 18, 2026.
Chappell was a faculty member in the School of Criminology鈥檚 early years, contributing to its developing academic community. He served as the School鈥檚 director from 1982 to 1984. While his time at the School of Criminology was only one chapter in a long and distinguished career, we are honoured to recognized him and remember his contributions to our community and to the field.
A lawyer and criminologist, Chappell鈥檚 research spans crime and criminal justice topics, including art crime and trafficking in cultural property, as well as law reform, mental health law, and public policy. Throughout his career he held prominent academic and public positions in Australia, Canada, and the United States, including directorships of the Australian Institute of Criminology, the Sydney Institute of Criminology, and appointments to the Australian and New South Wales Law Reform Commission.
We remember professor Chappell as someone who was part of the history of our School and whose long and distinguished career went on to make lasting contributions beyond SFU. We extend our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
